최근 AI가 실험 환경을 탈출해 다른 기업을 해킹하거나 사람을 속이려 한 사례들이 잇따라 보도됐습니다. 하지만 전문가들은 "기계가 세상을 장악하는 것"은 아니라고 말합니다. AI는 도구일 뿐, 그 도구를 나쁜 목적에 쓰는 '사람'이 진짜 위협이라는 것이죠. IBM 보고서에 따르면 2025년 2월부터 2026년 3월까지 데이터 유출 4건 중 1건이 AI를 이용한 것이었고, 미국인들은 지난해 AI 관련 사기로 8억 9,300만 달러 넘게 잃었습니다. AI는 피싱·악성코드 같은 기존 수법을 더 빠르고 정교하게 만들 뿐, 완전히 새로운 공격을 스스로 만들어내는 건 아니라는 게 전문가들의 진단입니다.

AI isn't the mastermind behind today's most widespread cyber threats; it's people who can use AI nefariously – and for nefarious purposes. AI has given bad actors massive power, allowing them to create malicious software, research targets, create convincing schemes and automate attacks at an unprecedented pace.

One in four data breaches were driven by AI from February 2025 to March 2026, according to an IBM report. And Americans lost more than $893 million to AI-related scams last year, the FBI says.

But experts say real-world threat actors – that is, people – are still the ones pulling the strings. AI agents have only perpetuated existing attack methods, like phishing and malware scams, rather than creating wholly new ones.

Meta must tighten controls on children's accounts and pay $567 million into a fund to remedy its role in a youth mental health crisis, a New Mexico judge ordered Thursday, in a ruling that dealt the social media giant another hefty penalty and compared it to polluting factories.

The ruling comes as Meta, along with other social media companies, face a reckoning over allegations of harms to children, including multiple lawsuits across the country.

A jury in March had already found Meta liable on all counts in a trial on child safety, including willfully engaging in "unfair and deceptive" and "unconscionable" trade practices. That earlier decision addressed concerns from parents, whistleblowers and lawmakers alike. Meta in that ruling was ordered to pay $375 million in damages.
