Sony hikes PlayStation 5 prices because of tariffs

Sony will raise prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States by around $50 starting Thursday, as the Japanese conglomerate navigates a slow recovery in the videogame market while U.S. tariffs threaten to raise costs.

All three PlayStation 5 consoles will see a similar price hike, with the most expensive PS5 Pro version expected to cost $749.99, the company said in a blog post on Wednesday.

The price changes come after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports from global manufacturing hubs such as China and Japan, leading to fears of supply chain disruptions and high material costs.

Sony had raised prices of its consoles in various European markets in April. Rival Xbox also hiked sticker prices of its consoles and accessories in the U.S., Europe, Australia and the UK a month later.

Consoles were expected to be a major driver of videogame market growth this year due to the launch of premium titles such as Take-Two Interactive’s “Grand Theft Auto VI” and Nintendo’s Switch 2.

But console price hikes and the delay of highly-anticipated “GTA VI” to next year have cast some doubt on the pace of growth in the industry.

On Wednesday, Sony said there are no price changes for other markets and prices of PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged.

소니는 수요일 블로그 게시물을 통해 PS5 전 모델 가격을 인상한다고 밝혔다. 최고가 모델인 PS5 프로 버전은 749.99달러에 이를 것으로 예상된다.

이번 조치는 도널드 트럼프 대통령이 중국과 일본 등 글로벌 제조 거점에서 수입품에 대한 대규모 관세를 발표한 이후 나온 것이다. 업계는 이에 따라 공급망 차질과 원자재 비용 상승을 우려하고 있다.

소니는 앞서 지난 4월 유럽 여러 시장에서 콘솔 가격을 올린 바 있다. 경쟁사 마이크로소프트 Xbox 역시 한 달 뒤 미국, 유럽, 호주, 영국에서 콘솔과 액세서리 가격을 인상했다.

올해는 테이크투 인터랙티브의 ‘그랜드 테프트 오토 VI(GTA VI)’와 닌텐도의 스위치2 등 프리미엄 타이틀 출시로 콘솔이 게임 시장 성장을 이끌 것으로 기대됐다.

그러나 콘솔 가격 인상과 GTA VI 출시 연기(내년 예정)로 업계 성장 속도에 의문이 제기되고 있다.

소니는 이날 다른 지역에서는 가격 변동이 없으며, PS5 액세서리 가격은 그대로 유지된다고 덧붙였다.
