Struggling students just posted their worst reading scores in over 30 years. Results from what's known as the Nation's Report Card. They were released today showing that students are falling further behind in reading. The National News Desk Geoff Harris joining us, some concerning numbers, Geoff, math scores showed little improvement, a little improvement. But those reading results, they have educators you spoke with worried.

Yeah, concerning but not surprised is what I kept hearing over and over again today, Dea Dea. The National Assessment of Educational Progress is considered one of the best gauges of academic progress in the U.S. school system, and the results today showed that reading skills are getting much worse. Nicole Bradford, a former educator for over 20 years, tells us it's concerning to see the results from the latest Nation's Report Card.

It shows us that what we're doing currently is not working.

Given every two years, the exam was administered in early 2024, testing fourth and eighth grade students in every state on math and also in reading. The results? Students are still lagging behind pre-pandemic levels.

Data from the report card shows that reading scores specifically have been on the decline for years now. Let's take a look at some of the numbers. Fourth grade scores that you see here represented with the blue bar there on the left-hand portion of your screen dropped from 220 in 2019 to 215 in 2024. Eighth grade scores that are represented by the purple bar here, they fell from 263 in 2019 to 258 last year.

Now, the U.S. Education Department says the results are, quote, heartbreaking and reflect an education system that is failing students despite billions of dollars in annual funding and more than $190 billion in Federal Pandemic Relief.

걱정스러운 수치들이 나오고 있다. 제프, 수학 성적은 약간의 향상이 있었지만, 읽기 성적은 심각한 수준이며, 이 점이 교육 관계자들에게 큰 우려를 불러일으키고 있다.

이 시험은 2년마다 실시되며, 2024년 초에 전국적으로 4학년과 8학년 학생들을 대상으로 수학과 읽기 능력을 평가했다. 결과는? 학생들은 여전히 팬데믹 이전 수준에 도달하지 못하고 있다.

보고서의 데이터에 따르면, 특히 읽기 점수는 수년 동안 계속해서 하락하고 있다. 몇 가지 수치를 살펴보자. 화면 왼쪽의 파란색 막대로 표시된 4학년 점수는 2019년 220점에서 2024년 215점으로 하락했다. 보라색 막대로 표시된 8학년 점수는 2019년 263점에서 지난해 258점으로 떨어졌다.

미국 교육부는 이번 결과에 대해 "가슴 아픈 일이며, 막대한 연간 교육 예산과 1,900억 달러 이상의 팬데믹 지원금에도 불구하고 교육 시스템이 학생들을 제대로 지원하지 못하고 있음을 보여준다"고 밝혔다.
