This time round, Britain faces the worst financial crisis in a generation. Despite Charles III’s coronation being a ‘slimmed down’ affair, with just a quarter of the number of guests compared to Elizabeth II, the entire pomp and ceremony could reportedly cost over $100 million. 

이번에는 영국이 한 세대 만에 최악의 금융 위기에 직면했다. 찰스 3세의 대관식은 엘리자베스 2세에 비해 하객 수가 4분의 1에 불과한 '간소화된' 행사임에도 불구하고, 전체 대관식 비용은 1억 달러 (약 천삼백 억원)가 넘는 것으로 알려졌다.

At a time when many Brits are struggling to put food on the table, that’s a tough bill to swallow. The U.K. may still be the sixth richest country in the world, but it remains one of the most unequal nations in the G7. 

많은 영국인이 먹고 살기 위해 고군분투하고 있는 이 때, 이는 받아들이기 힘든 청구서다. 영국은 여전히 세계에서 6번째로 부유한 국가이지만, G7에서 가장 불평등한 국가 중 하나다.

And yet, in the most tone-deaf way, retailers are celebrating a surge in sales of coronation-themed cakes and champagne. No amount of golden carriages, jewel-studded crowns and celeb stardust can gloss over the day-to-day reality for millions of Brits.

정부 자체 통계에 따르면 어린이 10명 중 거의 1명이 식량 빈곤을 겪고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 소매업체들은 눈치도 없이 대관식 테마 케이크와 샴페인의 판매량이 급증하는 것을 축하하고 있다. 아무리 황금 마차, 보석이 박힌 왕관, 반짝이는 유명인이라도 수백만 영국인의 현실을 덮을 수는 없다.

“Let them eat cake”, Marie Antoinette supposedly said during a famine which reportedly led to the downfall of the French monarchy. While a revolution isn’t coming anytime soon to Britain, the new King and Queen would do well to read the room carefully.

"케이크를 먹게 하라"는 마리 앙투아네트의 말은 프랑스 군주제의 몰락으로 이어진 기근 중에 한 말이라고 한다. 영국에 조만간 혁명이 일어나지는 않겠지만, 새로운 왕과 여왕은 분위기를 제대로 파악하는 것이 좋을 것입니다.
