얼마 전, 플로리다 주립대학교(FSU) 캠퍼스에서 총기 난사 사건이 발생해 미국 사회에 또 한 번 충격을 안겼습니다.
하지만 이 사건은 올해 들어 발생한 수많은 학교 총격 사건 중 하나에 불과합니다.

CNN 분석에 따르면, 2025년 3월 19일 기준으로 미국에서는 벌써 8건의 학교 총기 난사 사건이 발생했으며, 이로 인해 5명이 목숨을 잃고 최소 7명이 부상을 입었습니다.
학교 내 총기 사건은 팬데믹 이후 해마다 급격히 증가하고 있으며, 일부 주에서는 인구 대비 발생률이 특히 높은 것으로 나타났습니다.

There have been eight school shootings in the United States so far this year, as of March 19. Four were on college campuses, and four were on K-12 school grounds. The incidents left five people dead and at least seven other victims injured, according to CNN’s analysis of events reported by the Gun Violence Archive, Education Week and Everytown for Gun Safety.

CNN cross checks these reports of school shootings against school and police accounts and media reports. All incidents of gun violence are included if they occurred on school property, from kindergartens through colleges/universities, and at least one person was shot, not including the shooter. School property includes but is not limited to, buildings, fields, parking lots, stadiums and buses. Accidental discharges of firearms are included, as long as at least one person is shot, but not if the sole shooter is law enforcement or school security.

In the first year of the pandemic, when schools were closed, there was a major decline in gun violence incidents on school grounds. Since then, recent years saw a stark increase in school shootings, with 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 all setting records since at least 2008. There were at least 83 incidents in 2024, but 2022 was one of the deadliest years, with 47 fatalities, according to CNN’s analysis. That year saw the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 students and two educators were killed and more than a dozen others were injured.

올해 3월 19일 기준, 미국에서는 총 8건의 학교 총기 난사 사건이 발생했다. 이 중 4건은 대학교 캠퍼스에서, 나머지 4건은 유치원부터 고등학교(K-12)까지 학교 부지에서 일어났다. CNN이 총기 폭력 기록 데이터베이스(Gun Violence Archive), 에듀케이션 위크(Education Week), 에브리타운 포 건 세이프티(Everytown for Gun Safety) 등의 자료를 분석한 결과, 이번 사건들로 최소 5명이 숨지고, 7명 이상이 부상을 입은 것으로 나타났다.

코로나19 팬데믹 첫 해에는 학교들이 문을 닫으면서 학교 내 총기 사건이 크게 감소했다. 그러나 이후로는 학교 총기 난사 사건이 급증해, 2021년, 2022년, 2023년, 2024년 모두 2008년 이후 최다 기록을 세웠다. 2024년에는 최소 83건이 발생했으며, 2022년은 사망자 수 기준 가장 치명적인 해 중 하나였다. 2022년에는 텍사스 유밸디(Uvalde)에 위치한 롭 초등학교(Robb Elementary School) 총격 사건이 발생해, 학생 19명과 교직원 2명이 목숨을 잃고 12명 이상이 다쳤다.

2025년 현재까지 발생한 학교 총격 사건 수는 과거와 비교해 어떤가 3월 19일, 즉 올해 78일째 되는 날까지 미국에서는 8건의 학교 총격 사건이 발생했다. 연보라색은 각 해 78일째까지 발생한 사건 수를 나타낸다.

Some states in the south have seen the highest rate of school shootings relative to their populations since 2008, according to CNN’s analysis. Washington, DC had the highest rate — 6 total shootings, almost 1 per 100,000 people — while Texas had the most overall with 62 school shootings. Meanwhile, just five states — Montana, Wyoming, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island — had no school shootings in that period, according to CNN’s analysis.

CNN 분석에 따르면, 2008년 이후 남부 지역 일부 주에서 인구 대비 학교 총격 사건 비율이 가장 높게 나타났다. 워싱턴 D.C.는 총 6건으로, 인구 10만 명당 거의 1건에 달하는 가장 높은 비율을 기록했으며, 텍사스주는 총 62건으로 전체 사건 수가 가장 많았다. 반면, 몬태나, 와이오밍, 뉴햄프셔, 버몬트, 로드아일랜드 등 5개 주는 이 기간 동안 단 한 건의 학교 총격 사건도 발생하지 않았다.

남부와 중부 대서양 지역에서 학교 총격 사건 비율이 높았다 CNN 분석에 따르면, 회색으로 표시된 다섯 개 주는 2008년 이후 학교 총격 사건이 발생하지 않은 곳이다.
