Good Morning! <

When Apple holds its annual iPhone event on September 9, it'll be the first time in more than a decade that Tim Cook won't introduce the company's latest products. Instead, John Ternus will debut as Apple's new chief executive during the company's most important event of the year.

Expectations are high. Ternus takes over as Apple faces pressure to evolve its products for the AI era. In July, the iPhone maker became the second company in history to reach a $5 trillion market capitalization, raising the bar for what analysts and investors expect from product advancements and financial performance.

Ternus' background in hardware engineering led many to believe his tenure is likely to usher in a new age of innovation for Apple. Many will be watching for signals of Ternus' vision this week, especially as the company is expected to follow rivals into a new product category with a foldable iPhone.

Ternus will need to quickly cement his direction for Apple beyond the fanfare of this week's event. The company faces a string of pressing challenges, including regulatory obstacles in Europe and a memory shortage.

Ternus's engineering experience could be a big advantage for Apple, which has suffered criticism over its approach for the last two years. Last year, the company delayed a new version of Siri that is now set to launch this fall.

In the near term, Apple is banking on Siri to help gain ground in the AI race. Apple says the new Siri will be able to complete tasks in certain apps and answer questions about what's shown on screen, a feature that could help it catch up to Google's Gemini.

More than anything else, all eyes will be on Ternus to deliver a new blockbuster hit. Yet investors and analysts are hopeful that Ternus will bring a fresh push into new products, such as the foldable iPhone. The IDC projects that Apple will capture 40% of the market for foldable phones by 2027, despite being years behind rivals Samsung and Chinese smartphone giant Huawei.

• market capitalization: 시가총액 The company's market capitalization passed $1 trillion last year.

New York City is banning the use of generative artificial intelligence for public school students from 2K through 8th grade, part of a larger move to restrict classroom technology in the nation's largest school district.

The one-year moratorium will affect nearly 600,000 public school students, nearly two-thirds of the district's total enrollment. As part of the policy rollout, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the district will "discontinue or disable the AI components of more than 38 previously allowed programs that do not meet our new safety and oversight standards."

Mamdani announced the policy on Wednesday with New York City Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels, saying it's designed to protect students' critical thinking abilities as well as the relationships between students and teachers.

Many communities across the country have pushed for stricter limits on screentime and AI use, amid growing fears that the technology could stunt students' learning and development or pose safety risks.

New York City high school students will have access to a limited slate of AI tools and receive "AI critical thinking" courses. Companion chatbots, as well as mainstream services such as ChatGPT and Claude, will be blocked for all grades.

Teachers will be allowed to use AI for lesson planning and other "operational tasks," but not for grading or student assessments.

New York state last year banned students from using personal phones during the school day. But Mamdani's office called Wednesday's announcement the country's "most expansive" limits around AI use in schools. The policy includes exceptions for students with disabilities and English learners.

"The tech industry wants us to believe that AI in early education is not only inevitable, but that it is necessary," Mamdani said during Wednesday's press conference. "We do not see it that way."

The city placed a moratorium on new construction.
Too much screen time may stunt a child's development.
• a slate of: (예정된) 일련의, 몇 가지의 The company announced a slate of new services.
• expansive: 광범위한, 폭넓은 The law gives regulators expansive powers.
